What To Expect

Lets be real...a lot of people never go to therapy because it can appear intimidating and there is a lot of misconceptions about therapy. So give me a chance to prove all that wrong. Therapy can change your life and you deserve that opportunity. So here is a bit more info to ease some of those jitters.

Once you schedule an appointment you will be sent a link for my client portal where you can complete your intake forms electronically.

Your first session will include us getting to know each other. I will give you information about myself and my therapeutic style. I will ask you about your wishes for therapy, you'll be given the opportunity to ask me any questions as well as set the tone for what you do and don't want to talk about. We will work together to build some goals for therapy and you will be given options on how we can achieve them. My goal for every first session is for you to leave confident that we built a plan together and you feel optimistic and hopeful that we can make some great changes together.

The therapeutic relationship can make or break therapy. Please feel comfortable asking any questions that you need answered in order to make sure I am the right match for you.

If you don't feel a connection or that I am not a good fit for you. No problem. I am always more than happy to provide referrals for additional therapists.

Coping Skills

What To Expect

Our brain can react to a situation in life in a wide range of ways. You can get sad, anxious, angry or sometimes you just don't know what it is. This doesn't mean you are broken or "crazy". It simply means you need to figure out what your brain needs and supply it with what it is missing or not doing on it's own.

The majority of the first few sessions is us working together to identify your brain dynamics, triggers and ultimately why you are having these negative reactions, feelings or thoughts. Then we work together to build coping skills to help you get rid of all those pesky thoughts and feelings you have been having.

Coping skills can extend to many different styles, strategies and levels of energy to complete the tasks. Some of the coping skills that most of my client's have found the most helpful in learning are...

  • Thought Control Tools
  • Relaxation Skills
  • Positive Sleep Skills
  • Self Esteem Skills
  • Self Control Tools

The Deep Stuff

The Deep Stuff

The fear of "going deep" or being made to talk about something you don't want to is a big misconception about therapy. I will never make you talk about something you don't want to. As well as exploring something "deep", addressing trauma or talking about your childhood is always your choice.

I will always be up front with my clients in suggesting what I feel they could benefit from when it comes to therapy. You would also be surprised that most client's feel comfortable exploring this route after the first couple of  sessions.

It is an unfortunate reality that a lot of our symptoms, whether it is anxiety, poor self esteem, trouble with relationships, etc. are usually related and developed by a negative experience in life.

Our brains have a complex processing system and it is not uncommon for them to get stuck in the process. A lot of the times coping skills and a little venting can clear this up. However sometimes your brain needs a little more guidance.

If you are interested in exploring more deeper work I am more than happy to look at those options with you. I promise that it will not feel as scary as it seems. Ultimate healing comes from being able to clear up all the negatives that have happened in your life.
